Potato Market Update by Bruce Huffaker

Chip potato supplies are adequate to fill production needs. However, buyers continue to express concern about the quality of the raw product that they are receiving. High temperatures are leading to heat necrosis and other delivery issues. In addition, dealers report that North Carolina potatoes have hollow heart problems. They are hoping that quality will improve once they get through the first part of the crop. Open potatoes are selling for contract price.

Michigan growers appear to be pleased with this year's crop progress. While some low spots have been lost, the crop is generally in good condition. This appears to be true for crops across the northern tier of states, though growers in some areas are concerned that crops are behind, due to a lack of heat units.

In the fresh market, Michigan packers shipped 11,300 cwt of potatoes during the week ending June 19. That is down from 22,100 cwt a year ago. Shipments were 44.5% Russets and 55.5% Round White varieties..

Wisconsin packers are selling non Size A Russets in 10# bags for mostly $5.00 per 50# bale, unchanged from last week. Wisconsin 50-70 count cartons are selling for mostly $10.00-$11.00 per 50# box, also unchanged for the week. The weighted average price for Idaho Russet Burbanks held fell to $9.93 per cwt, from $10.23 per cwt a week ago. Prices for large Idaho cartons are coming under pressure, as new-crop Russets from Kern County, California come to market.

There appears to be a gap in Round White potato pricing, between the end of the Florida season and the start of Harvest in North Carolina and Virginia.
